Gordon Guyatt, M.D, Professor

Gordon Guyatt is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Health Evidence and Impact at McMaster University. He coined the term “evidence-based medicine” (EBM) in an editorial, introducing the idea in 1991, and has since been a leading advocate of evidence-based approaches to clinical decision-making.

He is one of the founders of the GRADE working group and is the first author of the most important GRADE publications. He is a world recognized expert in trustworthy guideline development and has taken a prominent role in dozens of guidelines.

He has published over 1,500 papers in peer-reviewed journals; according to the Web of Science his work has been cited over 200,000 times.

In 2011, he received Canada's highest award for civilians, an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2013 he was chosen as the Canadian Institute for Health Research Researcher of the Year and in 2016 he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.  In 2022, he was honoured by the Einstein Foundation for his contributions to improving the quality of medical research.
